The tennis player João Fonseca lost to Czech Jakub Menšik in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros this Tuesday (2), under the eyes of Guga Kuerten. He would face German Alexander Zverev, who is already in the semi-finals of the championship.

Menšik and Fonseca had already faced each other on the professional circuit in October 2025, at the ATP in Basel. João won by WO after the Czech was injured. They also played in the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2024 (under-21 tournament). On that occasion, João won the match by 3 sets to 2.

João won the first game without conceding any points. The Czech reacted and won the next one. That would be the tone of the dispute, very fierce. Fonseca lost performance after a break of serve from Menšik and the set was 4-2. The Brazilian made a reaction, but ended up losing the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Fonseca tried to react. He won the first game, and Menšik won the next. After another break of serve, the match looked like a replay of the first set. The Czech continued to be very strong on serve and took the second set 6-3. Two sets to 0 for Menšik.

The third set began with the Czech’s serve. Very close, the game lasted more than six minutes and was the Brazilian’s first break of serve in the game, as he started ahead in the third half. In the second game, João served well and had no difficulty in winning the partial without conceding any points. In your next loot game, the Brazilian managed to save three break points from the Czech but he couldn’t hold it and the set was tied. Everything the same again.

With the set tied at 3-3 and on Menšik’s serve, João takes the lead on the scoreboard by breaking the Czech once again, 4-3 for the Brazilian. In a game lasting more than ten minutes, João is unable to confirm the serve and Menšik breaks the Brazilian, tying the set at 5-5.

Afterwards, the Czech confirmed and opened 6-5, but Fonseca saved six break points and managed to take the set to a tie break, 6-6. In the tiebreak game, Menšik opened 2 points, the Brazilian managed to score 3, but the Czech was more precise and managed to close the tie break at 7-3 and, therefore, the game. Three sets to zero for Menšik.

Fonseca’s next championship should be the ATP 500 in Halle, Germany, to get off the clay and start the grass season. The competition is scheduled to begin next June 15th.
