FIFA suspends Qatari athlete for 5 games for breaking Canadian player’s leg during World Cup

FIFA’sspent five games, this Wednesday (24), Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo after his expulsion in the last match against Canada for fouling Ismaël Koné, which caused a fracture in the Canadian player’s leg. The confrontation took place last Thursday (18). “Suspension of 5 games for violation of article 14.1.e (serious foul play) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code”, announced the Federation.

The move took place at the beginning of the second half in a dispute for the ball. Canada won the match 6-0. After Qatari midfielder Madibo entered Koné, the Canadian player fell to the pitch and his teammates went after referee Cristián Garay. Madibo was expelled due to the seriousness of the case. Canada’s athletes gathered in a circle that had forward Jonathan David crying. Koné came out on a stretcher and waved to the fans.

The game was 3-0 when the injury happened. When celebrating the fourth goal, athlete Saliba took Koné’s number 8 shirt and showed it to the stands.

Suspended for five games in official matches for the Qatar national team, Madibo can still appeal this decision.

In an official statement, just before Qatar’s game against Bosnia and Herzegovina this Wednesday, the FIFA said that the suspension is already taking effect for the match and today. “The suspension will be served in the next match(s) of the Qatar national team at the FIFA World Cup and in accordance with art. 69 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The decision is subject to appeal before the FIFA Appeals Committee,” he wrote.
