A federal judge from the United States suspended the Donald Trump measure that prevented the entry of international students at Harvard University.

The temporary restriction order issued on Thursday night (5) by district judge Allison Burroughs happens hours after the university requested the emergency intervention to block a.

The order suspended international visas for new students at the country’s oldest and oldest university. Foreign students represent about a quarter of the institution.

The judge’s text stated that if there was no immediate intervention, the institution would “be immediately and irreparable damage before there were the opportunity to hear all parties” on the defense to the decree. The judge stated that her order “will remain in force until the new order of this Court.”

Burroughs, nominated by former President Barack Obama, marked an audience for mid-June to hear the arguments about whether she should block Trump’s proclamation indefinitely.

The lawsuit claimed that Trump’s proclamation violated the first amendment by blocking visas that most students use to study at American universities or participate in academic exchange programs.

Trump’s proclamation instructed the Secretary of State to “consider the revocation” of visas – known as Visas F, M and J – for current Harvard students who serve the proclamation’s “criteria”, the White House said in a statement.

“The secretary of the internal security department and the president sought to erase a quarter of Harvard’s student body, international students who contribute significantly to the university, its mission and the country,” the text says.

“Without its international students, Harvard is not Harvard,” he said.

The Visas Program, which allows international students “to enter the United States with non-immigrant visas to enroll in Harvard and thousands of other institutions, has boosted the academic, scientific and economic success of the United States, as well as their global position,” the process says.

In his lawsuit amended, Harvard countered the White House allegations that proclamation is an attempt to “safeguard national security” and said it represents “a government revenge against Harvard.”

Trump’s proclamation is based on a statute that gives the president the authority to protect the nation from “any class of foreigners whose entry is harmful” to US interests, according to the document.

Harvard argues that Trump is not suspending entry to any of these disciplines: “On the contrary, non -immigrants can enter the country without restrictions as long as they do not attend Harvard,” the process says.

In a statement to the university community on Thursday, Harvard Rector Alan Garber said the proclamation is “another illegal measure taken by the government to retaliate against Harvard.”

Harvard’s international community, Garber said, “makes extraordinary contributions inside and outside our classrooms and laboratories, fulfilling our mission of excellence in countless ways.”

The institution will “celebrate them, support them and defend their interests as we continue to affirm our constitutional rights,” he added.

A CNN contacted the White House for comments.
