At least 29 people died and about 50 were injured in a rally on Saturday by actor and politician Vijay, in the state of Tamil Nadu, southern India. The news was advanced by The Hindu newspaper, which cites state health minister Ma. Subrmanian.
Vijay is in a campaign for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam political party before the state elections that will take place at the beginning of next year.
At least 44 doctors from the neighboring districts of Tiruchirappalli and Salem were sent to Karur, according to the newspaper.
The country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, has already reacted to what happened. “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply sad. My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones. I wish all the difficult time. I pray for a quick recovery for all who were injured,” he wrote on social network.

State Government head, MK Stalin, said that “the news coming from Karur is worrying,” adding that he gave instructions to ministers and responsible to provide urgent medical assistance to injured people in the Karur rally and ordered additional support from Tiruchirappalli.
