Human Rights Commission asks PGR to arrest Cláudio Castro after operation in RJ

According to reports, there is evidence of summary executions and deaths caused by gunshots and stabbings in the back.

The Human Rights and Minorities Commission of the Chamber of Deputies sent, this Wednesday (30), a request to open a criminal investigation and order the preventive detention of the governor of , (PL). The document was forwarded to the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonetand mentions possible human rights violations during the police operation considered the most lethal in the state’s history, which resulted in 121 deaths.

According to reports received by the commission, there is evidence of summary executions and deaths caused by gunshots and stabbings in the back, which would constitute serious violations of the right to life and physical integrity of residents of the affected communities. The president of the commission, deputy Rimund (PT-RJ), stated that the State “cannot act as a violator of rights, but has the duty to protect”. The parliamentarian classified the police action as a “slaughter” and warned of the risk of new operations with similar characteristics.

The document requests the PGR to carry out an independent expert and criminal investigation, in addition to creating a monitoring mechanism to identify victims. According to official data from the Rio de Janeiro government, among the 121 dead, four were police officers. The deputies also ask for the tracking and official inventory of the weapons seized in the operation, claiming that there is strong evidence that the action went beyond the limits of legality, proportionality and respect for human rights.
