O planned to use drones equipped with night and thermal vision cameras to monitor police operations at night, according to a complaint from the Public Ministry of (MPRJ) that motivated the mega-operation in the Alemão and Penha complexes, last Tuesday (28). The action resulted in the deaths of 121 people, making it the deadliest in the state’s history.
According to the document, members of the faction exchanged messages in a WhatsApp group to discuss the purchase and use of the equipment. In addition to the use of technology, the MPRJ states that messaging groups were used to coordinate drug sales, organize shifts at tobacco outlets, define armed surveillance points and guide the training of new members. Doca is cited as the main leader in freedom, and another 68 people were denounced for association with trafficking.
In one of the conversations, Carlos da Costa Neves, known as Gadernal, laments the limited number of drones available and defends the need to acquire more advanced models: “We have to adapt to the technology, understand?” He adds: “BX will buy the night shift. We are waiting there to buy.”
Washington Cesar Braga da Silva, the Big Guy, agrees with the proposal: “Mine isn’t nocturnal, no, man. We have to buy the nocturnal one. Nicolas even missed this parade.” Another member adds: “During the day we will see it clear, but at night we will see it dark. We have to have thermal, which we will be able to see.”
The messages show that CV leaders sought to expand control over territories and reinforce monitoring of security forces. During the mega-operation, according to the MPRJ, criminals even used drones to launch explosives at agents.
Gadernal is appointed as general manager of drug trafficking in Complexo da Penha and responsible for the expansion of the faction in the Jacarepaguá region, alongside Edgar “Doca” and Juan Breno “BMW”. The complaint describes that he “exercises leadership over the vast majority of traffickers, providing guidance on the acquisition of firearms, surveillance drones and other equipment.”
