PF confirms Bolsonaro’s need for surgery – 12/19/2025 – Politics

The Federal Police confirmed to the (Supreme Federal Court) that the former president (PL) needs to undergo elective surgery and another procedure as soon as possible. The report was sent after the minister’s determination.

It will now be up to the rapporteur of the case to decide on judicial authorization for the procedure. Bolsonaro has been detained at the PF regional superintendency in Brasília since November 22nd.

According to the report, in relation to the hernia, the case is one of elective repair.

“There is no indication of urgent/emergency surgery in any medical report or examination available, considering that there is no description of incarceration or strangulation of the hernia(s) at any time, including until the present examination”, states the document.

Hiccups require faster intervention, both because previous treatments have not been effective and because the condition can worsen other conditions.

“With regard to hiccups, blocking the phrenic nerve is technically relevant. Regarding the timeliness of the procedure, this Medical Board understands that it should be carried out as soon as possible, given the refractoriness to the established treatments, the worsening of sleep and nutrition, in addition to accelerating the risk of complications of the hernial condition, due to the increase in intra-abdominal pressure”, say the experts.

The analysis was carried out by four experts from the National Institute of Criminalistics last Wednesday (17).

Bolsonaro’s defense asked on two occasions for urgent authorization for the former president to undergo surgery. The first petition was presented on December 9th and the last one on Monday (15th). The exams were accompanied by a lawyer and a doctor appointed by Bolsonaro.

According to lawyers, he needs a surgical procedure to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia, in addition to additional interventions.

Inguinal hernia is a condition in which tissue in the abdomen swells and causes a bulge to appear in the groin area.

Moraes determined that the examination carried out last Sunday (14) and the reports attached to the case files were sent for analysis by medical experts last Wednesday (17) at the INC (National Institute of Criminalistics). Based on this expertise, the minister will conclude the request.

To experts, Bolsonaro reported that the hiccups started in September 2018 after the first abdominal surgery. After that, he underwent another seven surgeries and the condition returned each post-operative period and lasted around 30 days. After the last procedure, however, the hiccups didn’t stop.

Moraes authorized Bolsonaro to do physiotherapy sessions while sunbathing. The STF minister’s decision on Thursday (18) responded to a request from physiotherapist Kleber Antônio Caiado de Freitas presented by the former president’s defense.

According to the professional, “it is clinically necessary and essential to continue regular physiotherapeutic monitoring” as this is an “elderly patient, with a history of multiple abdominal surgical procedures and presenting general weakness”.

This Friday (19), Bolsonaro’s lawyers sent a supplementary request to the minister so that the physiotherapist can carry out daily sessions after 6pm, a time that would not compromise the professional’s regular clinical activities.
