Has your school or kindergarten been closed? You can apply for nursing allowance: Parents, read how to do it!

  • The flu epidemic leads to the closing of schools and preschools.
  • Parents can request a nursing allowance after the facility is closed.
  • The entitlement to sick leave lasts a maximum of 14 days and only for one insured person.

In connection with the growing number of flu and other respiratory diseases, some regions of Slovakia are closing classes, schools and preschools. In such cases, parents with sickness insurance can claim a sick leave allowance. Sociálna poisťovňa (SP) reminded that it is not necessary to visit the attending physician when a school or facility is closed.

Application for sick leave due to the closure of a school, preschool or social services facility is available on the SP website among forms under number 278. The form is filled out by the parent, who indicates the period of application of the claim, the name of the child and signs the declaration. It will then be confirmed by the relevant facility and, in the case of an employee, by the employer. It is then delivered to the branch of the Social Insurance Company according to the employer’s seat.

The application can also be submitted electronically via the portal slovensko.sk. Confirmed form no. must be attached to the electronic form. 278.

Entitlement to medical allowance due to the closure of the facility arises for a maximum of 14 calendar days and for the same reason only once and for one insured person. It can be used for a child up to the age of 11 or up to 18 if he has a long-term adverse health condition. In the case of an employee, it is also a condition that the income is not reached, which is considered the assessment basis during the period of care.

If the school is open, but the child gets sick, sick leave can be drawn based on a pediatrician’s confirmation. Even in this case, the maximum period of 14 calendar days applies. At the same time, the SP pointed out that the right to nursing allowance does not arise if the caring person receives another dose of sickness insurance, for example sickness or maternity. Self-employed persons and voluntarily insured persons are advised to check the payment of insurance premiums before submitting an application.
