The fire engulfed a high-rise building in the Friedrichsfelde district in the East Berlin district of Lichtenberg. The available photos show that the fire started in one of the apartments on the fourth floor. Firefighters later clarified that there was an unusually large amount of furniture in the apartment, which resulted in the rapid spread of the fire. The entire building was heavily smoky during the fire.
About 60 people were in the house at the time of the fire. Some got to safety on their own, others were evacuated by firefighters.
As the newspaper Bild wrote, five people required immediate medical attention. Three of them – two children and one adult – suffered life-threatening injuries and had to be resuscitated on the spot and then taken to hospital. One of the children succumbed to his injuries later in the evening.
Firefighters extinguished the fire in the meantime. 20 apartments are currently uninhabitable: some have no electricity or water, others are very smoky.
