In 1980, TV Cultura aired a series about thirty years of television in Brazil. The programs brought unique content: testimonials from professionals who made the history of broadcasters, such as Globo, Record, Tupi, Bandeirantes, Excelsior and Paulista.

Paulo Machado de Carvalho (1901-1992), who founded Record in 1953, is asked about how he decided to enter the television market. At the time, the businessman already owned the Record and Panamericana radio stations (today Jovem Pan). “The great journalist Assis Chateaubriand [fundador da Tupi, em 1950]with those crazy things and his way of living, he took a trip, among the countless ones he took every fifteen days, he took a trip to the United States. He came from the United States, imbued with this subject of television, which was also starting there. So, Assis, one day, after receiving some machines, some equipment, called me into his office and decided to show me a little, something new, which was an absolute novelty in Brazil. (…) He encouraged me a lot: ‘you can’t stop, you’re a fighter, you need to get into this television business, you need to get into this television business’. And he did so much and said so much that I decided to enter“, highlighted Paulo Machado de Carvalho. The leader then revealed that he had been convinced by Assis Chateaubriand himself, founder of the pioneer Tupi, in 1950, to enter the television market.

Doctor Paulo decided to talk to his brother-in-law, who was also from the area: “Then I gathered my brother-in-law, who was already a partner at Rádio Record, João Batista do Amaral, and decided to see what this subject of television was all about.”. Record, opened in 1953, marked an era in Brazilian communications with notable programs: Família Trapo, Jovem Guarda and the Song Festivals.

In 1980, TV Cultura also collected testimonies from Paulo Machado de Carvalho Filho, known as Paulinho (1924-2010), who, for years, was responsible for managing Record, and Nílton Travesso, one of the greatest television directors in the country. He was part of the broadcaster’s “Team A”, which also included Antônio Augusto Amaral de Carvalho, Tuta (1931-2024), Raul Duarte and Manoel Carlos. The group was responsible for creating Record programs in the 50s and 60s.
