Ship hits ferries in the Port of Santos and crew jump into the sea

A container ship hit two ferries on the night of Monday the 16th, on the crossing between Santos and Guarujá, at the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. According to the São Paulo Department of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, there are no reports of injuries.

The accident happened around 9:30 pm. At the time of the occurrence, the two vessels were out of operation and occupied only by their crewstherefore no passenger vehicles or passengers on the boats.

“The FB-15 vessel, which was carrying out a support maneuver for the FB-14 on the crossing between Santos and Guarujá, was hit by the Seaspan Empire,” stated Semil.

Also according to the secretariat, the crew who were on board jumped into the sea and swam to shore in safety.

Damage was restricted to the bow of the vessel.

Due to the occurrence, the vessels remain out of operation on the Santos sideawaiting determination from the Port Authority.

Ferry crossings between cities continue as normal, carried out by the other vessels in the fleet.

The Crossings Coordination monitors the investigation of the facts with the maritime authorities and reinforces that, since Thursday, 12th, the special operational plan for the Carnival holiday has been in force at the State’s eight coastal crossings, with an expanded fleet and continuous monitoring to guarantee safety and fluidity in transport. The operation continues until February 18th.
