American industry groups applauded the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday that struck down President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs.
The National Retail Federation, which represents retailers including Walmart, Kroger and Costco, said the decision provided “much-needed certainty for U.S. companies and manufacturers.”
“A clear and consistent trade policy is essential to economic growth, creating jobs and opportunities for American families,” said David French, NRF executive vice president of government relations.
The US footwear industry said the decision “brings relief at a time when cost pressures have been significant.”
Ninety-nine percent of all shoes sold in the U.S. are imported, according to Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America.
The court did not rule on the fate of the $130 billion in tariffs that have already been levied, but the NRF urged lower courts to “ensure a continued process to refund tariffs to U.S. importers.”
The US Chamber of Commerce, which called the decision good news for businesses and consumers, also called for refunds.
“Swift reimbursement of undue tariffs will be significant for the more than 200,000 small business importers in this country and will help support stronger economic growth this year,” said Neil Bradley, executive vice president and chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
