Chia seeds are the seeds of Spanish sage, Salvia hispanica L., a plant originating from what is now Mexico and Guatemala, which already in the pre-Columbian era was a an important element of the diet of local communities. They are sold in a dried and purified form, without advanced processing, which means that the consumer receives a product that is practically unchanged technologically. Individual seeds are very small, oval, in shades of black, gray or light beige, and when poured with liquid, they quickly form a gel layer around them. This phenomenon is due to the high content of soluble fiber, which binds water and increases the volume of the seeds many times, which is used in desserts, cocktails and as natural thickener for dishes.

In terms of taste, chia remains almost neutral, with a subtle nutty note, so it does not significantly change the taste of dishes and is easily combined with yogurt, salad or fruit mousse. They are widely available in discount stores, supermarkets, health food stores and online, usually in packages of 200 to 500 grams. The price of a standard 200 gram package is usually around PLN 6-10, while products marked as organic cost significantly more and may exceed PLN 12 for the same quantity.

When it comes to weight loss, the most important advantage of chia seeds is their high fiber content approximately 30-35 grams in 100 grams of product. Just one moderate serving, about 15 grams, provides 4-5 grams of fiber, which is a significant part of the daily norm for an adult. The soluble fraction binds water and increases the volume of food, making the meal feel full for longer and helping to reduce snacking. At the same time, fiber supports intestinal peristalsis, which is especially important in reducing diets where the supply of vegetables and whole grain products is too low. often leads to constipation.

In addition to chia fiber, they provide unsaturated fatty acids, including alpha linolenic acid from the omega 3 group, as well as protein and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Omega 3 fats support the lipid profile and functioning of the cardiovascular system, while minerals play a role in maintaining the proper functioning of the nervous system. Including chia in your daily diet can therefore support not only weight control, but also… overall metabolic condition.
