Haddad leaves the Ministry of Finance on Friday (20) – 03/16/2026 – Economy

The Minister (Finance) will leave the federal government next Friday (20), when his dismissal from office is expected to be published. The PT member must take a ten-day break before diving into the pre-campaign for the governor of São Paulo.

On Thursday (20), the head of Finance must communicate the decision to the press alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (), during an event in which the two will participate in the state. It will be Haddad’s informal launch of his candidacy.

Lula had asked Haddad to accompany him on the trip, scheduled for next month, but the uncertainty regarding the date of the official visit meant that the minister could not attend due to the deadlines for non-compliance and the need to concentrate on the electoral dispute.

On the date of his dismissal, the minister will give a formal interview about the pre-candidacy.

Haddad resisted being a candidate for the government of São Paulo and has repeatedly said that he is campaigning for the 2026 elections. “I’m talking to the president about this. Let’s see who convinces who,” he said in February.

The minister will face Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who has good popularity ratings. If the dispute between the two were today, Haddad would score 31% in the first round, against 44% for Tarcísio according to the last one.
