Outgoing President of the Constitutional Court: PS may have only 3 appointed judges

Constitutional Court announces at 17h00 decision on foreign law

The president of the Constitutional Court (TC) may be leaving and has already expressed his desire. With the departure of José Abrantes, the number of names nominated by the PS is thus reduced to three judges.

It is yet another subtraction from a loss that the Socialist Party says is decisive. The term as judge advisor only ends in 2029, but the newspaper says that José João Abrantes does not want to continue at Palácio Ratton.

When he stops being president – which should have happened last summer – he will also leave the panel of judges, in April or May.

Deadlock in negotiations

There is currently a replacement of three seats in progress, which must be carried out by the Legislative Assembly.

If the negotiation between PSD and Chega leaves the PS out, with the Social Democrats advancing with two names and Ventura’s party with another, the PS will lose a nomination.

And as the current president was nominated by the PS, the socialists are on the verge of going from five nominated judges to three.

The lack of agreement has already led to several postponements requested by the PSD, Chega and last week by the PS.
