The change in holiday destinations for thousands of British tourists is gaining expression this summer, with a significant number replacing planned trips to the Middle East with stays in Portugal, in a movement associated with perceived security factors and the reorganization of international tourist flows.
According to , around 300,000 British citizens will be reconsidering destinations such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Jordan, opting for Portugal as an alternative, in a context in which instability in the Middle East influences previously defined travel decisions.
A diversion in tourist flows
According to the same source, this change represents a relevant share of the British market associated with this region, estimated at around 10% of a total of close to three million usual travelers, showing a redistribution of tourist flows towards other destinations considered more stable.
The publication adds that this type of reconfiguration is not limited to a specific change in reservations, but reflects a progressive adaptation of tourist itineraries, already visible in travel choices for the summer period.
Portugal as an alternative destination
According to statements by António Lopes de Almeida, associate professor at the Instituto Superior de Administração e Gestão, cited by the same source, “we are witnessing a clear reconversion of tourist flows, which has implied the repositioning of Portugal, which has now become a shelter destination due to its security”.
The same expert emphasizes that the perception of stability plays a central role in travelers’ decisions, particularly when faced with destinations subject to more unstable geopolitical contexts, which contributes to the transfer of demand to other markets.
Change in visitor profile
According to the same source, this movement of tourists may also be associated with a change in the profile of visitors, with a greater presence of travelers belonging to the middle and upper classes, which translates into different consumption patterns and tourist behavior.
The professor adds that this new profile tends to favor destinations that combine accessibility, diverse offer and conditions considered safe, factors that directly influence the choice of vacation location and the type of services sought.
Impact on travel agencies
It is also important to highlight that travel agencies have been registering changes to the itineraries initially defined by customers, with destination reviews and adjustments motivated by concerns related to safety in certain regions.
Miguel Quintas, president of the National Association of Travel Agencies, says that “these are tourists who, on vacation, prioritize safety and who have already started to change their initially planned itineraries”, highlighting the speed with which some decisions are being reviewed.
Reconfiguration of the tourist market
According to the same person in charge, this change corresponds to a significant part of the British market that traditionally seeks the Middle East as a holiday destination, but is now redistributing itself to other geographies, including Portugal.
According to Jornal de Negócios, this reconfiguration is being accompanied by tour operators and agencies, who adjust their offer according to new demand trends and the evolution of international contexts that influence the sector.
