Astronauts name lunar crater after dead commander’s wife

They proposed naming a lunar crater in honor of the late wife of the mission commander, Reid Wiseman. Carroll Taylor Wiseman died in 2020, a victim of cancer.

The crew also proposed that another crater be named Integrity, for the Orion spacecraft used in the mission.

In a live broadcast, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen said that one of the craters can be seen “at certain times during the transit of the Moon” around the Earth. “And we would like your name to be Carroll.”he declared.

Hansen stated that the suggestion was “significant” to the crew of Artemis 2. He said the astronauts’ journey began a few years ago and in the meantime, they lost “a loved one”referring to Carroll.

ARTEMIS 2

In addition to Wiseman and Hansen, the Artemis 2 crew consists of Victor Glover and Christina Koch. The mission on Monday (April 6, 2026) reached the highest point on the Moon since the end of the Apollo Program, more than half a century ago.

While skirting the far side of the Moon, on Monday (April 6), the crew experienced one of the rarest moments of the mission. Astronauts observe phenomena that combine extreme scale, orbital dynamics and a unique vantage point of the Earth-Moon system.

The crew used high-resolution cameras to record impact craters and ancient lava flows, in addition to observing geological formations in polar regions, considered strategic for future manned landing missions on the Moon.

Although Artemis 2 did not perform the lunar landing, the validation of critical systems more than 400 thousand km from Earth is for the next stages of the Artemis program.

The data collected on radiation, life support and piloting maneuvers will be used to ensure the safety of future missions that are expected to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972, with Apollo 17, consolidating the lasting human presence on the natural satellite.

The success of the maneuver represents a decisive step towards advancing its plan to return astronauts to the lunar surface in the coming years.

After flying around the Moon on Monday (April 6), the astronauts began their journey back to Earth.
