US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the fate of Iranian enriched uranium are central points of the ceasefire with Tehran, highlighting that American forces will remain “close by” to ensure compliance with the agreement. According to him, Iran will allow ships to pass, and “commerce will flow” in the region.
At a press conference at the Pentagon, Hegseth said that Tehran must hand over its entire stockpile of enriched uranium to the United States. “We know how much uranium Iran has. If they don’t deliver, we will look for it,” he said, indicating that Washington is prepared to act if there is no compliance. For the secretary, the nuclear issue will be decisive in sustaining the truce.
The Pentagon chief also said pressure on Iran’s energy exports was crucial in bringing the country to the negotiating table. According to him, US threats to Tehran’s ability to sell oil and gas helped force a deal.
Hegseth also assessed that the new Iranian regime presents a different stance in its dialogue with Washington, which could facilitate the implementation of the ceasefire. Still, he highlighted that “it takes time” for truces to be consolidated and that the US remains vigilant.
“We hope and believe that the ceasefire will continue,” he said, adding that “it would be wise for Iran to tell its troops to cease firing.” The secretary reinforced that the American military will continue to monitor the situation to ensure compliance with the agreed terms.
