Pre-candidate for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies for Minas Gerais, Eduardo Cunha claimed responsibility for the current strength of the right in the country. In an interview with the newspaper O Tempo, the former president of the Legislative House said that the impeachment process of the then head of Planalto Dilma Rousseff (PT), led by him in 2016, changed the course of national politics and paved the way for the opposition of the time to come to power years later.
— If I hadn’t carried out the impeachment, there wouldn’t have been (Jair) Bolsonaro president of the Republic, and none of these right-wing exponents who are there would have any prominence today — said Cunha.
In the interview, the former deputy stated that he did not regret opening Dilma’s impeachment process and confirmed his intention to use this experience as an asset to try to return to the Chamber in this year’s election.
— I would have perhaps done the impeachment faster. I don’t regret anything,” he highlighted.
Bolsonaro was elected in 2018, after defeating Fernando Haddad (PT) in the race for Planalto. Four years later, he failed to be re-elected, defeated by Lula. Cunha told the newspaper that to this day he is stopped on the streets to take photos and receives compliments for his role in Dilma’s downfall. For every ten opinions he receives, according to him, only one disapproves of his conduct in the case.
—Who took the PT out of power? The only one was me. You can say whatever you want […] Without my action, nothing would have happened — he reinforced, citing the then president’s approval numbers among the factors that contributed to the outcome.
