Universal Electronic Population Registration Systemcommonly known by its abbreviation PESEL numberis a basic tool for identifying natural persons in Polish databases. This eleven-digit code is absolutely necessary when handling matters in offices, medical facilities, banks or the Social Insurance Institution, as well as when signing various types of contracts. Its construction is based on strictly defined rules, where each character carries specific information about the owner of the document. The initial six characters correspond to the date of birth, with the value of the month being modified depending on the century of birth. The next four positions have an ordinal function and determine gender, which can be recognized by the penultimate digit, which is odd for men and even for women. The whole thing ends with a special check digit, calculated using an appropriate mathematical algorithm, which allows IT systems to instantly verify the correctness of the entire identifier.
