The award was created in honor of American journalist Kurt Schork, who died in 2000 while reporting for Reuters in Sierra Leone.

The award has three categories: Freelance Award, aimed at independent journalists who cover conflict zones; Local Reporter Award, for professionals who report events in their own countries, especially in vulnerable contexts; and News Fixer Award, which recognizes local support work for international correspondents.

The winners in each category receive US$5,000 (around R$25,000 at current prices). Registration is open until June 14, 2026.

To compete in the Freelance and Local Reporter categories, it is necessary to submit three reports published between June 1, 2025 and June 14, 2026. Candidates for the News Fixer Award must present three references from foreign correspondents with whom they have worked in the same period.
