State registered 86 cases from January to March, an increase of 41% compared to 2025; homicides, robberies and thefts fell in the period
The State of São Paulo recorded 86 femicides in the 1st quarter of 2026, the highest number for the period since the beginning of the historical series. The total represents an increase of 41% compared to the first 3 months of 2025, when 61 cases were recorded. The data was released by (São Paulo Public Security Secretariat).
There were 27 cases in January, 29 in February and 30 in March. In the same period of 2025, the records were, respectively, 22, 20 and 19. The quarter of 2026 also surpassed that of 2024, when there were 75 femicides.
The increase in femicides contrasts with the drop in other criminal indicators in the State. In the same period, intentional homicides fell from 660 to 632 cases. Robberies, robberies followed by death, fell from 38 to 19 incidents.
Property crimes also fell. Thefts totaled 36,514 records from January to March, compared to more than 45,000 in the same period in 2025. Thefts fell from around 140 thousand to 132 thousand occurrences.
Rape records in the State totaled 3,852 cases in the 1st quarter of 2026. The number was practically stable in relation to the same period in 2025, when 3,862 incidents were recorded.
In the capital of São Paulo, however, there was an increase. Cases rose from 815 to 828 in the quarter, an increase of 1.6%.
CASE OF PM DEATH
One of the femicides recorded in the quarter was that of PM Gisele Alves Santana, 32 years old. She was killed with a shot to the head on February 18, 2026, in the apartment where she lived with her husband, in Brás, central region of São Paulo.
Her husband, PM lieutenant colonel Geraldo Leite Rosa Neto, aged 53, is accused of feminicide. He denies the crime and claims that Gisele committed suicide. The version is contested by the investigation.
On Tuesday (April 28, 2026), the Superior Court of Justice said the case will be judged by the common courts, in the 5th Jury Court of São Paulo.
OTHER SIDE
The SSP-SP stated that it monitors criminal indicators on a permanent basis and that combating violence against women is a priority for the state government.
According to the ministry, the State expanded the protection network, with 144 Women’s Defense Police Stations and 173 DDM Rooms (spaces within police stations dedicated to specialized care for women victims of violence) for remote assistance. The secretariat also reported that it has reinforced service with more than 650 police officers and plans to open 69 new DDM Rooms.
The secretariat also said that the measures include a Ten-Year Target Plan to Combat Violence against Women, itinerant assistance, the SP Por Todas program and a cooperation agreement with the São Paulo Court of Justice to expand electronic monitoring of aggressors.
