Switzerland will be led at the 2026 World Cup by its emblematic captain Granit Xhakawho will compete in his seventh major national team tournament, accompanied by Manuel Akanji, Breel Embolo and Denis Zakaria. Coach Murat Yakin, who has been in charge since 2021, announced on Wednesday (20) a list without any major surprisesexcept for the presence of Zeki Amdouni.

The Burnley striker, who still needs to regain his playing rhythm, has been on the field for just 45 minutes this season, after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in July last year. “He’s not 100% yet, but he knows how we play, he knows the systems, the movements, he knows his role,” explained Yakin at a press conference, highlighting the 25-year-old player’s versatility.

For a country of 6.6 million citizens who are passionate about skiing and ice hockey, Switzerland has been among the most regular European teams at the World Cup. Present in the tournament since the 2006 edition, the Swiss reached the round of 16 in 2014, 2018 and 2022, although the last elimination was with a 6-1 defeat against Portugal.

Switzerland is in Group B of this year’s World Cup alongside hosts Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar, his opponent in his debut, on June 13, in San Francisco.
