Brazil proposes regional pact against feminicide in Mercosur

Initiative presented by the Minister of Women at a meeting in Paraguay proposes cooperation between countries

The federal government proposed on Friday (May 22, 2026) the creation of a regional pact against feminicide in Mercosur, inspired by the Brazilian model of . The initiative was presented by the Minister of Women, during the 26th Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities for Women in Mercosur, in Asunción, capital of Paraguay.

According to the minister, the proposal provides for cooperation between the bloc’s countries to strengthen policies to prevent violence, protect and expand access to justice.

“It is a political commitment between all States parties and associates of Mercosur to act in a coordinated and cooperative manner, respecting their sovereignty, competences and national legal frameworks, to confront femicide as a regional priority”said Márcia Lopes.

Uruguay supported the proposal and guaranteed that it will continue the debate during its presidency of Mercosur. Argentina, in turn, informed that it will still carry out internal consultations on the topic.

In addition to the regional pact, the Brazilian government presented measures related to the regulation of digital platforms and combating .

“Brazil takes the lead with the decrees announced by President Lula this week, aimed at women and all mechanisms for important regulation of digital platforms”said the minister.

The country also presented to the Paraguayan government the results of the first 100 days of the Brazil Pact against Feminicide.

According to the Ministry of Women, the initiative allowed the arrest of 6,3000 aggressors, the reduction of the period for analyzing protective measures from 16 to up to 3 days and the monitoring of more than 6,500 women using electronic devices.

Paraguay’s Minister of Women, Alicia Pomata, defended the expansion of regional cooperation to tackle inequalities.

“Regional integration must be built from a perspective that places women at the center, recognizing their realities and valuing their contributions to the development of our nations”Pomata said.
