HBO is preparing a dramatized series inspired by the Corinthian Democracy, a movement that marked the history of Brazilian football and became a symbol of resistance to the military dictatorship in the 1980s.
With eight episodes, the production will follow the trajectory of players Sócrates, Casagrande and Wladimir, as well as football director Adílson Monteiro Alves, central characters in the initiative that implemented an unprecedented management model at Corinthians.
At the time, athletes, managers and employees participated in the club’s decisions through internal votes, at a time when Brazil was still living under an authoritarian regime.
According to the synopsis released by HBO, the series will show how the group helped transform Corinthians on and off the field, leading the team to win the 1982 Campeonato Paulista while defending values linked to democratic participation and freedom of expression.
The production is in the pre-production phase and the casting process has already begun.
The series was created by Moara Passoni, who also directs alongside Maria Farkas. The general direction will be in charge of Aly Muritiba. The script is by Passoni and David Barker, a duo who worked on “Democracia em Vertigem”, a documentary directed by Petra Costa and nominated for an Oscar.
Produced by Maria Farinha Filmes for HBO, the work has not yet had a release date announced.
