Lula says he was never a leftist in audio leaked at G7 – 06/17/2026 – Politics

The president (PT) said this Wednesday (17) that he had never been a leftist, in an audio leaked at an event held by the group of seven countries with the largest economies in the world.

The politician was speaking with the general director of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), Kristalina Georgieva, and with the chancellor of , Friedrich Merz, about politics in other countries in the world, such as , when he stated that “the world is not left-wing”.

The conversation was captured in a recording by the Associated Press news agency.

Lula also stated that “the world is on the middle path. That is the truth.” When asked by the head of the IMF that the expectation was that his mandate, in 2003, would be leftist, the PT member denied it.

“I was never a leftist,” said Lula, who completed the conversation by talking about his career as a union leader and saying that he was called “anti-communist” in the 1980s, after refusing a trip to the Soviet Union.

“I was a trade union leader with a wonderful relationship with German trade unionism. I had a good relationship with Italian trade unionism. I had a good relationship with UGT in Spain”, stated Lula.

At the G7, the main world powers meet to discuss pressing issues on the global stage. The group is formed by , , , , , and .

President Lula participates in the G7 as a guest. He took advantage of the event to talk about artificial intelligence, protection of minors on the internet and regulation of social networks, among other topics.
