The President of the United States, Donald Trumpconfused this Wednesday (17) the senator and pre-candidate for President, Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), and the former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) to the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Speaking during the closing of the G7 summit in France, the Republican said that “Heard they arrested Bolsonaro Jr.”.
“He was doing well in the polls, and they arrested him, because he made a statement in Texas. They arrested him, or they want to arrest him,” Trump added.
On the same occasion, the North American president stated that the . To journalists, the Republican declared: “they play hard, but no one plays harder than the United States”.
Afterwards, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) countered Trump’s statements. In an interview with journalists, Young Panthe PT member sent clear messages to his North American counterpart:
- “The person who has to learn from Brazil is Trump,” said Lula, highlighting that the country holds clean, transparent elections monitored by international organizations;
- Regarding money laundering, the PT member stated that Delaware is a known haven for criminal organizations and even Brazilian terrorist groups;
- The Chief Executive declared that all weapons entering Brazil come from Miami and stated that he had already delivered a document to the White House pointing out this situation. Lula added that “Trump likes to talk a lot and doesn’t like to listen, but with him it’s different: I show, I signal”;
- The Brazilian said he was “super in favor” of a good relationship between the two countries, as long as there is respect for the sovereignty of each nation.
- Regarding the Bolsonaro family, the PT member stated that Trump can continue to like Bolsonaro, the father and the son — “like is not discussed” —, but that he should not get involved in the Brazilian elections, because “Brazil’s election is Brazil’s problem”.
- Lula emphasized that the only request he makes to the United States is mutual respect.
Climate of diplomatic friction
The episode reflects the climate of diplomatic friction between the two countries, with an exchange of public statements involving the Brazilian Judiciary, the Bolsonaro family and topics such as trade, weapons and transnational crime.
