The 47 years of the so-called Islamic Revolution were overshadowed by weeks of violent protests by a population that survives, for the most part, in an economy on its knees
The Government of Iran marked this Wednesday the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Republic, which began with the 1979 Revolution, in a movement that overthrew the monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, after years of an oppressive regime, supported by the United Kingdom and the United States.
But the nearly five decades that followed have not been better luck for the majority of Iranians, particularly women and minorities. The Islamic Republic does not tolerate dissent, does not forget the role of the West in maintaining the Shah and treats any critical expression in a violent and totalitarian manner.
The 47 years of the so-called Islamic Revolution were overshadowed by weeks of violent protests by a population that survives, for the most part, in an economy on its knees, as a result of international sanctions. But Iranians also demand freedom of expression, free elections and an end to the theocratic regime, in which a large part of the population does not see itself.
The demonstrations in recent months have been some of the harshest since the beginning of the Islamic Republic. According to international organizations, the repression was felt with equal force. The images, always taken in the absence of authorities, showed hundreds of corpses in morgues or hospitals. In addition to apologizing for the economic situation, President Massoud Pezeshkian did not refer, in his official speech this Wednesday, in Azedi Square, in Tehran, to the human tragedy.
Netanyahu frustrated in Washington
Meanwhile, in the capital of the United States, the President and Prime Minister of Israel spoke about the Iranian nuclear program and the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Benjamin Netanyahu left, however, frustrated from a meeting in which he expected a more forceful solution from Trump regarding the Iranian nuclear program and the steps to be taken to prevent Tehran from continuing with the enrichment of uranium.
After the meeting, there were no statements to journalists or official images, other than a photo with a handshake between Trump and Netanyahu. After that, the President of the USA said, on his social network, that, from the meeting, the conclusion was that they would continue with Iran through diplomatic channels, but that this did not rule out the military hypothesis. And that Iran should not forget what had already happened, referring to the June 2025 bombing.
