Dean of the STF stated that the former president of Colombia gave “unique density” to the debate on democracy and the economy
Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court, thanked the former president of Colombia Iván Duque for his support at the 14th Lisbon Forum. The Dean of the Supreme Court is hosting the event and was part of the table where the Colombian spoke.
“His trajectory, marked by his experience at the IDB [Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento], for his leadership on issues of development, democracy and innovation and for leading his country in times of severe adversity, he gave a unique density to the debate”wrote Gilmar in X made this Wednesday (June 3).
Duque spoke on Tuesday (June 2). THE keynote speech (main speech) had as its theme “Democracy, economy and technology in the contemporary world”.
The former Colombian president said, among other things, that Latin America needs to attract more private investment to grow and “create mechanisms” to survive a new reality: the end of multilateralism.
“His reflections on the reconfiguration of the international order, sovereignty and the challenges facing Latin America contributed to a broader understanding of some of the most complex issues of our time”said Gilmar.
Gilmar’s statement was made in response to one by Duque in X.
“At this meeting, I had the opportunity to speak with Gilmar Ferreira Mendes, minister of the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil, and André Esteves, president of BTG Pactual. We discussed extensively the defense of the separation of powers as a fundamental pillar of democracy and the need to avoid constitutional dictatorships that seek to perpetuate themselves in Latin America”wrote Duque.
