Brits ‘incredulous’ with scrutiny in Spain: tourists can only travel if they have “enough” money for their stay

Millions of tourists travel to Spain every year, but there is one rule that many are unaware of. Visitors from countries outside the Schengen area may be asked to prove that they have enough money to cover their stay, in addition to presenting documents such as a valid passport, accommodation and return ticket.

According to the British portal, the requirement gained greater prominence after Brexit, as British citizens became subject to the rules applicable to travelers from outside the European Union and the Schengen area. Still, the principle is not exclusive to Spain and also exists in other European countries.

How much money can be demanded?

According to information cited by the British press, Spain requires that visitors can prove economic means equivalent to 122.10 euros per person and per day in 2026. In addition, there is a global minimum value of 1,089.90 euros, even for shorter stays.

In practice, a tourist who stays for only four days may not only need the daily amount multiplied by the days of travel. You will also have to comply with the minimum value provided for by Spanish rules, if this proof is requested upon arrival.

Proof of means can be provided using cash, traveler’s checks, credit card accompanied by an updated bank statement, bank passbook or other document that proves the amount available. According to the information disclosed, bank letters or online statements may not be accepted.

Rule could lead to refusal of entry

Anyone who does not meet the entry requirements may be refused entry. However, it is not clear to what extent these checks are carried out systematically at borders or whether they only happen in specific situations.

In addition to proof of sufficient money, authorities may ask for other documents. These include a valid passport, visa when applicable, proof of accommodation, return ticket or proof of travel to another destination.

The rule does not mean that all tourists are automatically monitored. Still, anyone traveling must be prepared, especially during busy periods at airports and borders.

Spain is not the only case

Other European countries may also require proof of financial means. In France, for example, travelers with hotel reservations may be asked to demonstrate that they have 65 euros per day. Without proof of accommodation, the daily price can rise to 120 euros.

In Italy, tourists may also be asked about their financial ability to stay, although the amount varies depending on the length of the trip and the type of accommodation. Documents such as travel insurance, proof of accommodation and return ticket may also be requested.

Portugal may also ask travelers from outside the Schengen area for proof of economic means, as well as an exit or return ticket. These rules are part of the general entry requirements into the European space for certain visitors.

More care when traveling this summer

The financial requirements are in addition to other precautions that tourists must take before traveling. In the case of the British, for example, problems continue to arise related to the validity of passports and the so-called 10-year rule.

Furthermore, the new European entry and exit system, known as EES, has caused concern in several countries due to the risk of queues and delays. The system provides for biometric registration of travelers from outside the European Union, including fingerprints and photographs.

The recommendation for those traveling is simple: confirm the rules before departure, bring organized documentation and ensure that you can prove accommodation, return and financial means.

In the case of Spain, the rule may go unnoticed by many tourists, but it remains included in the entry requirements. To avoid surprises, it is best to travel with up-to-date receipts and not assume that entry will always be automatic.
