European Union leaders must take measures in order for Moldova and Ukraine to become full -fledged members of the block despite Hungary’s objections. After the victory of the government party of action and solidarity (PAS) in the Sunday parliamentary elections, this was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasim. According to the Politico portal report, TASR informs.
The Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister reminded the goal of Kišinov to join the Union by 2030. “These elections have shown us that Moldova is again believed in the European future and we are trusting the EU. It is now up to the EU Council to return this confidence,” she stressed in an interview with Politico. The government passport will have a majority of 55 seats in the 101-member legislature and will not have to compose a coalition.
Congratulations of European leaders
The President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen on the X Social Network congratulated Moldova for the election result. “Your decision is clear: Europe. Democracy. Freedom. Our doors are open. And we will accompany you at every step,” she wrote. The victory of the Passport was also appreciated by the head of the European Council António Costa and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsol.
The Moldova access process takes place in parallel with the request of Ukraine, which complicates the procedure. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán refuses to enter Ukraine into the Union and repeatedly announced that he would block it. The rules of the access process to the EU require unanimous consent of all Member States at each stage of the process, causing a stalemate.
Simplifying the access process
Politico reported on Monday that Costa is trying to gain support for the Member States to simplify the procedure of accepting new members and breaking the stalemate.
Costa suggests that the “clusters” (a group of thematically divided access chapters) can be opened with the support of a qualified majority of states, although unanimous consent would continue to be concluded. This model would allow Ukraine and Moldova to start reforms and prove progress even in case of disagreement of one or two countries, the source said.
“It is important for us to find a solution no matter what it looks like at the moment. We are very hoping that there will be sufficient unity to take a decision that will unblock the situation and allow progress to open new clusters,” Gherasimova stressed. According to her, Moldova and the EU have to take advantage of the historical opportunity and act quickly.
