Several Republican congressmen on Monday criticized President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the probable murder of American director Rob Reiner. Trump on Monday linked his murder to his political statements and criticism of his government. TASR writes about it according to the Axios portal and AP and AFP agencies.
- Republican congressmen criticized President Trump’s comments on Reiner’s murder.
- Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead in their home.
- Democrats and Republicans condemned the president’s comments as inappropriate.
American director, actor and producer Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their home in Los Angeles on Sunday. Both apparently died as a result of stab wounds. On Monday, the police arrested Reiner’s son, who is suspected of their murder.
Trump’s comments caused outrage
The head of the White House blamed the Reiners’ death on the director’s political views without providing any evidence. According to him, the director caused anger among many people with his criticism of the Trump administration. “He was known to drive people crazy with his rabid obsession with President Donald J. Trump, with his apparent paranoia reaching new heights,” the US president wrote on his social network, Truth Social.
In this context, the Reuters agency recalls that Reiner regularly commented on political issues and was known for his liberal attitudes.
“I would expect something like that from a drunk guy in a bar, not from the president of the United States,” Republican congressman Don Bacon, who will not run for next year’s election, told CNN. Former Trump supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene said Reiner’s death was a family tragedy and had nothing to do with politics or political enmity. Congressman Thomas Massie called the president’s remarks “inappropriate and disrespectful,” while New York moderate Republican Mike Lawler called them “wrong.”
Jenna Ellis, who was one of Trump’s lawyers and in 2020 and, according to AP, worked on his efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election, pointed out Trump’s double standards and called his post inappropriate. “The right has unanimously condemned the political and celebratory responses to the death of Charlie Kirk. This is a terrible example from Trump and should be condemned by anyone with a shred of decency,” she said in a post on X.
The Democrats’ answer
Several personalities from the ranks of the Democrats joined the criticism. David Axelrod, President Barack Obama’s former chief strategist, called Trump’s reaction perverse. “The absence of empathy and kindness towards Reiner’s family in their moment of deep loss and grief is sad and telling,” X wrote on social media.
According to Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, Trump is crazy. “Now he’s saying that Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own deaths because they didn’t support him. It’s sick,” he declared.
