Three skiers died on Friday after being swept away by an avalanche in the luxury French alpine ski resort of Val d’Isere near the border with Italy. It was reported by the Reuters agency, writes TASR.
According to local ski slope manager Cedric Bonnevie, the incident is under investigation. Preliminary information suggests that one of the victims was hit by an avalanche high up on the mountainside. The remaining two skiers moved within a group of five under the guidance of a professional guide. The group is located in the lower part of the slope and she did not see the approaching avalanche.
The cause of the avalanche is unknown. The French Meteorological Service warned of an increased avalanche danger in the area on Thursday. The number of victims of avalanches during the current season in the Alps is increasing. Overall, they have already claimed lives in the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps more than 20 skiers.
