An 8-year-old child was admitted in serious condition to the Rio Branco Emergency Room after eating a possibly poisoned candy in the early evening of this Sunday (15), on Rua da Caixa d’Água, in the Recanto dos Buritis neighborhood, in the Second District region of the capital of Acre.
According to information provided by the child’s mother, Salviana Leite de Souza, the girl was playing on a public street, close to the family’s residence, when she returned home feeling ill. Upon realizing that her daughter was unwell, the mother asked what she had ingested.

The child reported that, during a blackout in the region, an unidentified man approached and handed her some chocolates. The girl said she consumed the sweets and then went back to playing normally.
Minutes later, the child began to feel unwell, showing worrying symptoms. She returned home and told her mother what had happened. Concerned about her daughter’s condition, Salviana called the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu).

A basic support ambulance was sent to the scene. After the first care and initial stabilization of the clinical condition, the child was sent to the Rio Branco Emergency Room presenting shortness of breath, tachycardia — an increase in heart rate above 100 beats per minute — and miotic (contracted) pupils, symptoms that may indicate intoxication.
Due to the severity of the condition, the girl was rushed to the pediatric emergency department of the health unit, as there was a suspicion of a possible overdose or poisoning with an unknown substance.

Our team spoke to a healthcare professional who is following the case. According to him, the clinical signs presented by the child are compatible with the ingestion of some narcotic or toxic substance, but only tests can confirm the cause.
To date, the police have not been called to respond to the incident.
