Former President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa refused this Saturday to talk about politics, at the Celorico de Basto Book Festival, to continue crossing the “eternal desert” as he promised after leaving the Belém Palace.

The former president was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a visit to the Celorico de Basto Book Festival, where he began a cycle of cultural interventions today.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated that he would not speak “about the Constitution or local power”, but that, as a former head of state, he has some “formal and protocol responsibilities” and, therefore, will be present at moments such as the solemn session that will mark the 50th anniversary of the Constitution, which will take place in the Assembly of the Republic on April 2nd.

Marcelo participated today, in Celorico de Basto, in the meeting with the theme “What is the role of literature in the current moment?” and, on Sunday afternoon, he will be in conversation with writers David Machado and Hugo Gonçalves, according to a note from his office.
