returns to the fray with tariffs and threatens to apply 50% to those who supply weapons to Iran. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened this Wednesday to apply 50% tariffs to those nations that supply weapons to Iran.
“A country that supplies military weapons to Iran will be immediately assessed a 50% tariff on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, effective immediately,” the US president warned in Truth Social.
His threat comes minutes after the president published another message on the social network where he assured, after agreeing to the Iranian proposal to promote a two-week truce, that Iran will not enrich uranium and that “will dig up and remove” all its nuclear material.
Weapons imports into Iran, in figures:
If we look at the numbers, Iran is one of the countries in the Middle East that imports the least weapons, compared to powers like . According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Studies Institute (SIPRI), collected by EuropaPressnearly 26% of all international heavy weapons transfers in the last five years were destined for the Middle East.
In total, Iran only accounts for 0.2% of arms purchases in the region and less than 0.05% of global purchases between 2021 and 2025. The reason these figures were so low was the embargo by the United Nations Security Council, which forced Tehran to strengthen its own industry and not depend so much on its allied powers: China and Russia.
This embargo remained in place until 2020, although in 2025 it was activated again. It should be noted that the United States leads the ranking of suppliers to the Middle East, with a 54% share of arms transfers.
