The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, offered support to Pope Leo XIV this Tuesday (14), after the pontiff was harshly criticized by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Trump sparked the controversy by calling Leo XIV “terrible” in a long speech on Sunday (12). He later published an image generated by artificial intelligence in which , provoking even more outrage among Christians.
“I express my solidarity with Pope Leo XIII,” Meloni said before attending a conference on the wine industry. “Frankly, I wouldn’t feel comfortable in a society where religious leaders do what political leaders say.”
The Italian prime minister, considered close to the US president, stated on Monday (13) that the , highlighting the widespread indignation in Italy with the blunt statement against the pontiff.
In statements made in Verona this Tuesday (14), Meloni also stated that it was important to continue with peace negotiations to put an end to the war between the United States and Iran, also seeking the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
