In Portugal, many elderly people live on very low pensions that are not enough to cover all essential day-to-day expenses. The Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly, known as CSI, is support granted by the company that aims to strengthen the income of elderly people in situations of greater economic vulnerability. This support works as a complement to the monthly pension, helping to guarantee a minimum level of income.

The request can be made in person at Social Security services or through the online platform. In either case, it is necessary to present documentation proving income, expenses and the composition of the household.
After the request is submitted, Social Security analyzes the information and decides whether support is granted and the corresponding amount.
Support that is still little requested
Despite having existed for several years, the CSI remains under-requested. Many elderly people are unaware of its existence or do not know that they may be entitled to support, while others believe that the process is automatic and do not follow through with the request.
This lack of information means that many people who could benefit from support continue to live only on the basic pension.
