On Saturday (March 14), there is a risk of strong winds, especially in the west of Slovakia and in the mountains. Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) therefore issued warnings of the first degree with provisional validity from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. For high mountain areas, warnings are valid from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Warnings against strong winds apply in Bratislava region in the districts of Bratislava, Malacky and Pezinok. In the Trenčín region relate to Myjava and Nové Mesto nad Váhom districts. In the Nitra region these are the districts of Levice, Nitra, Topoľčany and Zlaté Moravce. In the Trnava region they apply in all districts except Dunajská Streda and Galanta. Meteorologists also issued them for the Poprad district in the Prešov region and for the Tvrdošín district in the Žilina region.
In these districts, the occurrence of wind is expected, which will reach an average speed of around 45 kilometers per hour or in gusts a speed of 65 to 70 kilometers per hour. “This speed represents a potential hazard to human activities. The predicted wind speed is normal for the time of year and area, but may cause minor damage,” added SHMÚ.
SHMÚ also warns against wind in the mountains. The warnings concern the districts of Banská Bystrica, Brezno, Poprad and the districts of the Žilina Region, with the exception of Bytče, Kysucké Nové Mesto and Čadce. Meteorologists in these parts of Slovakia are expecting rare winds that can reach a speed of 110 to 125 kilometers per hour in gusts and an average speed of 70 to 85 kilometers per hour, i.e. up to a gale.
The predicted wind speed is, according to them, normal for the given time of year and area, but it represents a potential danger for human activities, especially for hiking or mountain climbing.
