Expansion of technology should reach 2,220 cities and exceed targets set out in the initial 5G auction schedule
Projections from the Ministry of Communications indicate that, by the end of 2026, around 80% of the Brazilian population should have access to 5G technology. The expansion of the network should reach 2,220 municipalities, exceeding the target initially set for the period.
According to the original schedule, the country should reach 1,469 cities with 5G by 2026. However, the accelerated pace of infrastructure deployment should allow Brazil to surpass this number before the deadline. Currently, 5G is already present in around 1,420 Brazilian cities, benefiting millions of people with high-speed mobile internet.
Expanding coverage is part of the federal government’s strategy to internalize 5G and expand access to connectivity in all regions of the country, including small and medium-sized municipalities. The expectation is that more than 800 cities with less than 30,000 inhabitants will receive the technology in 2026.
According to the Minister of Communications, Frederico de Siqueira Filho, the expansion represents a historic leap for Brazilian digital infrastructure.
“We are going through the biggest connectivity transformation in our history. 5G is not just more internet speed. It represents innovation, competitiveness and new opportunities for millions of Brazilians”he declared.
Expansion of 5G in Brazil
The implementation of the 5G network in Brazil follows the schedule defined in the auction carried out by Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), which establishes progressive coverage targets, mainly in smaller municipalities.
According to planning, the technology should reach 30% of cities with less than 30,000 inhabitants by December 2026, advancing to 60% in 2027, 90% in 2028 and reaching universalization in 2029. The strategy seeks to reduce regional inequalities and ensure that digital transformation also reaches the interior of the country.
Benefits of 5G for the population
The expansion of 5G internet should boost several sectors of the economy and society, including agribusiness, education, health, industry, logistics and public security.
The technology offers speeds up to 100 times greater than 4G, in addition to allowing the simultaneous connection of millions of devices, opening up space for smart city solutions, industrial automation and applications with artificial intelligence.
“5G goes from the classroom to the countryside, from micro-entrepreneurs to large rural producers. We are ensuring that this technological revolution reaches all Brazilians”said Frederico de Siqueira Filho.
Connectivity
The advancement of the network is also beginning to transform the reality of regions further away from large centers. A recent example is the installation of a 5G antenna in the Massaroca district, in Juazeiro, Bahia. The arrival of technology has expanded access to high-speed internet for residents, students, entrepreneurs and public employees in the region.
During the activation of the antenna, the Telecommunications Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Hermano Tercius, said that the expansion of digital infrastructure is essential to promote social inclusion.
“This cell phone program brings digital inclusion to the most remote areas of the country. Connectivity guarantees access to education, public services and creates new opportunities for communities”he stated.
With the accelerated expansion of infrastructure, Brazil is moving forward to consolidate a broad and accessible 5G network, capable of boosting innovation, economic development and digital inclusion throughout the national territory.
