Bloody bodies spread across the streets: attack attributed to gang kills 70 people (at least) in Haiti

Attack left a trail of destruction in the Jean-Denis neighborhood

Around 70 people were killed on Sunday in an attack attributed to the armed group “Gran Grif” against residents of the Jean Denis neighborhood, in the Artibonite department, in Haiti, according to local media reports this Monday.

The attack, attributed to the Gran Grif gang, left a trail of destruction in the Jean-Denis neighborhood, with burned-out houses and bloodied bodies scattered across the streets, according to videos posted on social media. According to the Associated Press, many residents were caught in the middle of the chaos and faced moments of great tension.

So far the exact number of victims is not known, but preliminary reports point to around 70 deaths. This episode is another in a long sequence of violence that has shaken Haiti over the last five years, in a context of growing gang power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
